John Coonrod and Elizabeth Lee

From My Research

John and Elizabeth Lee Coonrod are the father and mother of George D. P. Coonrod, my gg grandfather. It appears that both sons (Stephen and John) of George and Rhody Mc Husen Coonrod named a son after their father in the same year, 1827. Stephen named his son George W. Coonrod and is verified in several pieces of documentation. Stephen and John moved to Greene County from Wayne County in 1829 and both had sons born in Wayne County. Birth records could not be obtained because the Wayne County courthouse burned down in the 1880s.

The John and Elizabeth family unit, as I have it up to now whe the help of other Coonrod descendants is:

John W. Coonrod        HH     b. 31 Dec. 1793 in Grayson Co. KY
                                            d. 25 Oct. 1846 in Greene Co. IL
Elizabeth Lee Coonrod SP    b. abt 1798
                                            d. 25 Sep. 1870 in Greene Co. IL
Dudley Coonrod            Son    b. abt 1818 in KY
                                                d. 22 Jan. 1863 in Fannin Co. TX
Nancy Coonrod             Dau    b. 2 Nov. 1818, KY
Charles T. Coonrod        Son    b. abt 1825
George D. P. Coonrod     Son    b. 7 May 1827, in Wayne Co. IL
                                                d. 7 June 1899, in Quincy, IL
Rebecca Coonrod            Dau    b. abt 1829
Stephen Newport Coonrod    Son  b. abt 1832
Henry L. Coonrod            Son    b. abt 1834
Mary E. Coonrod            Dau    b. abt 1844

The will of John Coonrod, dated November 26, 1846 indicates he was still married to Elizabeth at the time of his death. His son Dudley administered the will in conjunction with Thomas Findley and George Griswold. The land consisted of 40 acres valued at $200 and 1 acre valued at $15. Among the recipients of many small items were Dudley Coonrod, Thomas Coonrod, Stephen Coonrod, G.D.P. Coonrod, George W. Grizzle, James Findley and others whose names were not legible to my eyes.

A death notice in the Carrollton Patriot says that an Elizabeth Coonrod died near Greenfield at age 80 on Sept. 25, 1870. This may be John's wife if the age was incorrect in the obituary. This  may be Elizabeth Coonrod age 72 listed with the Thomas Fagger family on the 1970 Greene County Census in 1870.  If it is, her age coincides with her birth in 1798.

According to the Sutro Search Index and the AIS Census Index there were 2 Coonrods in Wayne Co. in 1820, John and Stephen. The Mormon IGI Index for IL shows Stephen Coonrod and Claudia Lee having a son, George W., born on 3 Sep 1827. The 1850 census shows George D. P. Coonrod was also born 1827 in Wayne County, Illinois, as do his admittance papers to the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, IL which say he was born on May 17, 1827. George W's profile in 'A History of Greene County' says he was from Wayne County.

Kentucky history.... Early land grants in this area were as Kentucky County, Virginia. In 1779 Kentucky had 3 counties; Jefferson, Lincoln and Fayette. In 1790, Virginia included West Virginia and Kentucky. Kentucky became a state in 1792.

From Richard Davidson in Wylie, TX, his ancestor Dudley Coonrod married Mary (Polly) Finley (Findley) in 1836 in Greene county Illinois. The validation of these facts were documented by Jessye Ann High in her family history. Dudley's parents were John and Elizabeth Coonrod and he was born in Kentucky around 1819.

There appears to be multiple Coonrod family groups moving through Kentucky during the late 1700's and early 1800's. Sorting out who is who will be a challenge.

Coonrod Research by Susie Gillick

Cat Moves

Susie Gillick uncovered a son of John and Elizabeth Lee Coonrod that I had not found. He was Stephen Newport Coonrod. With her permission I am quoting her e-mails to me . Direct quotes are placed in parenthesis and in bold text.

This is great information and was an important contribution to my family history. Many thanks to Susie. I really appreciate the time and effort she expended to document this information and share it with me. Perhaps others that visit this page will also benefit.

Visit her Gillick Family Web Site.  You will find more Coonrod information included there.  Click the 'C' button.

Susie's husband Bob;s " great grandfather was Hugh Henry James Gillick who was married to Nancy Etna Coonrod and her parents were Stephen Newport Coonrod and Mary F. Fitzsimmons. (Stephen's parents were John W. Coonrod and Elizabeth Lee - who was the fifth child of George and Rhody Coonrod!)"

"The family records that we received from my father-in-law, Alvin P. Gillick, Jr. when he joined the Mormon church had Stephen Newport Coonrod listed as the son of Stephen and Candas Coonrod. When I researched along those lines, I just couldn't find anything that I believed was about Stephen Newport. Stephen and Candas Coonrod had a son named Stephen, but his middle initial was M. So I can at least understand how easily it could be confused. "

"So I went looking for Stephen Newport and traced back from him. I think I originally found a 1850 census on the Greene County web site that had him listed as a son of Elizabeth Coonrod, a widow. It also listed other family members - his siblings. That is where I got the family listing. Today, I went to Ancestry.com and did some more searching. Of course, his father John died before the censuses listed anything more than the head of the household and then just numbers for the rest of the family, but I feel those censuses tie him to Elizabeth Coonrod and Stephen Newport Coonrod."

The following was clipped from her e-mail attachment.

"1860 Federal Census

Greene County, Illinois

pg 992; Dwelling/Family: 2527/2537

COONROD, Stephen, age 29, male, white, Farmer, value: $50, b. IL

COONROD, Angeline, age 18, female, white, b. IL

COONROD, Henry, age 1, male, white, b. IL

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The family moved to Texas in a covered wagon, leaving Greene County, 12 Nov 1876. They later returned to Greene County.
According to the 1850 Federal Census of Greene County, IL, Stephen Newport Coonrod was not the son of Stephen and Candas Coonrod, as family records have stated. He is the son of John Coonrod, b. Mar 1797, in Kentucky, and Elizabeth ???. His age of 18-19 in 1850 places him in this other family.
Info from 1850 Census:
Coonrod, Elizabeth, age 52, widow, white, female, real estate value $250, born in KY
Coonrod, Charles T., age 25, male, son, born IL, cannot read or write
Coonrod, Rebecca, age 21, female, daughter, born IL
Coonrod, Stephen N., age 18, male, son, born IL
Coonrod, Henry L., age 16, male, son, born IL
Coonrod, Mary E., age 6, female, daughter, born IL
On the 1850 Census listings for Stephen and Candas Coonrod, their son Stephen has the middle initial of M. and is only 13 years of age. The other children listed are those that we have listed as being Stephen Newport's siblings.
On the 1860 census for Greene County, Stephen is listed as being 29, white, male, and a farmer. It lists his wife as being Angeline, age 18, and a son Henry, age 1.
The other Stephen, listed as the son of Stephen and Candis Coonrod, is listed as being age 23, middle initial of M. and a farmer.
Some family records do show John and Elizabeth as being the parents of Stephen Newport Coonrod. Apparently John and the elder Stephen (married to Candis Lee) were brothers.
