Luke Frain and Mary Duffy had a son in 1836 (according to the son's obituary or 1837/1838 according to his marriage certificate) whom they named Luke. The family connection was obtained from family records kept by Lois Mae Tallman Briddick, wife of Earl Francis Briddick the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Frain Briddick.  Click on the family group Frain/Seeeney at the left to examine their marriage certificate and obituaaries.

His son's obituary claims his father was born in Ballyherine, County Mayo, Ireland. No town by this name can be found in Ireland. It is most likely a phonetic rendition of Ballaghadireen which was in County Mayo at that time. The town and surrounding country side was shifted to County Roscommon in 1898. My research has shown that many Frains come from this area, therefore, it is likely my ancestors are from Ballaghadireen. Residents of the town pronounce its name as 'Bal la ha'dreen'. With an Irish accent, Ballyherine would be pronounced the same way.

Parish Records

The Ballaghaderreen parish records were researched and no record was found for any marriage of Luke Frain, Fraine, Frayne, Freyne, Frane.

Information from the Kilmovee Parish records in the Diocese of Achonry provides a possible validation of the marriage of Luke Frain and Mary Duffy as noted in their son Luke's obituary. It is not conclusive and more needs to be done to prove or disprove the family connection.  Kilmovee Parish is a short distance south of Ballaghaderreen Parish and town, but is close enough that a family from a rural area close by might claim Ballaghaderreen as a place of birth. Also, Luke may have been born there and then gotten married in the bride's parish.  In fact, Luke  Frain/Frayne is shown to be in Magheraboy, which is in Kilmovee Parish in some lists of families in County Mayo.

On May 29, 1827 or 1828 Mary Duffy married her 3rd cousin Pat Higgins. Witnesses were Patrick Carol and Thos. Duffy. The difference in year is due to my early research which showed 1827 at the Mormon Family Center and later research on the East County Mayo website showed 1828.  On Jan. 30, 1837 or 1838 Luke Frain married Mary Higgins. Witnesses were Michael and Biddy Duffy. The difference in year is due to my early research which showed 1837 at the Mormon Family Center and later research on the East County Mayo website showed 1838

A possible scenario is that Pat Higgins died or left town and then Mary married Luke. The presumption that Mary Higgins may have been Mary Duffy is based on the fact that 2 Duffys witnessed Luke and Mary's marriage.  Secondly, of all the Irish records that have been researched, this is the only Luke Frain (Frayne, Fraine, Freyne, Frane) marriage that has been found.

My research has revealed many Catholics in my family. The Irish Catholic records their family births, their children's births, their marriages and their deaths in Catholic parish records,  I will research more parish records of the East County Mayo area as my project continues.

From the Marriage Record of Luke's son

According to the son's marriage entry at the General Register Office in England, his father's name was Patrick Frain who was deceased by the March 8, 1859 marriage date.  The handwriting on the marriage entry makes it appear that the clerk filled out the whole entry and he may have confused the first names of the fathers of the bride and groom. The bride's father is shown as Patrick Sweeney which concurs with her death certificate.  Until proven differently, the family version of the Frain ancestry will take precedence.

Information from Irish Records

Information bit:  Luke Frayne is found on the 1848 - 1864 Griffith's Valuation.  He lived in the townland of Magheraboy, Kilmovee Parish in County Mayo.  Many Fraynes are found in Kilmovee Parish. Many Freynes are found in Kilcolman Parish.  3 Frains are found in Agahamore Parish.  Franes are found in Kilbeagh Parish.  In looking in Griffith's Valuation, there is little or no overlap in name spellings in Mayo at that time.  Found at http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

From Irish Ancestors web site: 99 Duffy, 26 Higgins and 28 Frayne households were in Kilmovee Parish in 1856-7.  It is almost certain this would be family Luke left behind when he emigrated to Durham, Co., England.  He would have been a young person and depending on when he left, he may have had other family members with him.

Additional Research by Godfrey Duffy

Now that you have read this page, you might also want to read the Frain research contribution by Godfrey Duffy.  My family records and research provides the included information about Luke Frain and Mary Duffy.  Godfrey provides an alternate view.  It is presented, but the family version will be accepted until irrefutable proof is presented. It, also, adds more insight and knowledge about the Luke Frain and Mary Sweeney family.
