Frain, Patrick

Patrick is listed on the 1881 English census with his family as Patrick Frayne, a son, is age 13, born in Spennymoor Parish and is a coal miner. Spennymoor is about 10 miles south of the city of Durham.

From the research by Godfrey Duffy at the Durham Records Office: born 12 January 1868, bapt 19 January 1868, Patrick Frayne son of Luke Frayne & Mary Sweeney. Godparents Patrick Ryan & Mary Gorman. Our Lady Immaculate & St.Cuthbert's RC, Crook town, Co.Durham

Patrick was the son of Luke Frain and Mary Sweeney. He never married. Patrick and his father operated a newsstand in Spring Valley for many years. His father started it before 1900 and Patrick operated it after his death. I went to Spring Valley in 1988 to visit the place where my grandfather and great grandfather lived and were buried. While there, I stopped at a local Drug Store to buy film for my camera. While passing the time of day with the clerk I mentioned why I was in Spring Valley. He asked if I was related to old Pat Frain who used to run the newsstand across the street. I said yes, of course. The man went on to say that Pat was well thought of in Spring Valley. He must have been, to be remembered as such almost 40 years later.

The following are the obituary and funeral notices for Patrick.

PATRICK FRAIN - DEATH CERTIFICATE

Patrick Frain died at St. Margaret's Hospital in Spring Valley on Aug. 13, 1950. His date of birth was Jan. 6, 1870 and was born in Durham England. Cause of death was carcinoma of colon and coronary infarction. His father was Luke Frain and his mother was Mary Sweeney.

The only other memory I have of Patrick was as a boy and after he died. According to my father he had left money for his nieces and nephews. As best that I can remember, it was approximately $2,000. This is a vague memory and can't be relied upon fully. If true, besides being well remembered, a pillar of the church and community, he must have been a successful businessman as well.

Patrick emigrated from Durham, England in June, 1886. He sailed with his brothers John and Martin on the HMS 'City of Berlin' from Liverpool, England and arrived in New York on June 25, 1886.

Spring Valley

The various resorts in town are again filled with lewd women, and seemingly no attempt is made to enforce the law. Many blame the police for this, but some of those who should know say the blame should rest on the mayor and some of the councilmen, and not the police. It is even intimated that the police have received strict orders from his honor not to do anything with the women unless they are forced to by warrant. Just why the mayor should adopt this course is not generally known, but it is said that he is influenced to do so by some of his aldermanic friends. It is a well known fact that DELMAGRO is easily influenced and seemingly taking a risk, when he orders such a flagrant violation of law and decency.

The benefit for the public library which will be held in the opera house on the evening of Easter Monday, April 19th will consist of the thrilling drama, "The Ranche King," to be followed by a social dance. The cast will be as follows:
Jack Ralston, scout - Chas. SNERRARD(?)
Joe Dempsey, villain - Chas. MONTGOMERY
McFadden, ward politician - E. B. BARBOUR
Mr. Lester, banker and broker - Chas. FEHR
Cyrus, his servant - P. FRAIN (my comment: this has to be my great uncle Patrick Frain)
Kidder, Dempsey's pal - Jas. MORAN
Charley, a young terror - Ed. FEHR
Mary Lester - Annie HICKS
Miss Spriggins, a governess - Mand FEHR
Winona, an Indian maiden - Mary McCLARENCE

End of newspaper articles.
